'Bible Too Violent for Kids'

Aug. 3, 2000 - Lawyers from Bavaria have asked the Family Minister of the German Government to re-classify the Bible as a book considered too dangerous for children because it contains "bloodthirsty and human rights-violating passages."

"It preaches genocide, racism, enmity towards Jews, gruesome executions for adulterers and homosexuals, the murder of one's own children and many other perversities," wrote Christian Sailer and Gert-Joachim Hetzel.

The Bible should remain on a lists of books unsuitable for children until the offending passages were removed, they argued.

June 23, 2000 - A special report from Peter Jennings called the "Search For Jesus" won't be a Biblical approach. It will draw from the "scholarship" of the "Jesus Seminar" whose liberal membership doesn't believe the Bible is God's Word, and thinks that only 18% of Christ's words in the Bible were really said by Him.

School sued for 'trashing' Bibles

A suit has been filed against the Lynn Lucas Middle School in Willis, Texas, because a teacher would not allow two teenage girls to carry their Bibles to school.

The suit alleges that teacher Sara Flottman, on seeing two teenage sisters carrying Bibles to a Saturday morning make-up class March 11, led both of them to the principal's office, threw the Bibles into the trash and declared, "We don't allow this garbage here."

Britain: Church 'will be dead in 40 years time'

Apr. 17, 2000 - An expert church analyst has predicted that the Christian Church in Britain , will be "dead and buried within 40 years." Attendance in the last decade has fallen 22 percent, to 7.5%, and by 2040 only 0.5 per cent of the population will attend Sunday services. At that time, all claims that Britain is a Christian nation will finally have to be given up.

There will be fewer clergy in Britain and websites will be mandatory for any churches that are serious about trying to stay afloat. There will be a boom in "cyberchurch" attendance as the faithful log on to the internet in search of spiritual answers not to be found in their local churches.

Study:200,000 hooked on web porn

Feb. 29, 2000 - 20 million Internet users visit sexual sites every month, and it is estimated that 200,000 of them are addicted to pornography, spending over 11 hours per week visiting sexually oriented areas!

Clergy endorses sexual declaration

Jan. 20, 2000 - 850 clergy and "religious workers" agreed to a declaration on morality, calling upon all faiths to "bless same-sex couples and allow gay and lesbian ministers."

The one-page statement was sponsored by the Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States, or SIECUS, a group advocating sex education. It was being released at a news conference featuring John Buehrens and John Thomas, presidents respectively of the Unitarian Universalist Association and the United Church of Christ.

About half of the signers were from the those two denominations and from the Reform and Reconstructionist branches of Judaism.

British Churches Face Worst Attendance Decline Ever

Dec. 10, 1999 - In London, and across Britain, new billboards read "Religion is dead. God isn't religious - why should you be?" While 65 percent of Britons call themselves Christians, only 8 percent go to church.

The good news is that the billboards have been sponsored by "One Step Closer," an evangelical campaign designed to encourage churches to become more interesting to the people. The campaign has the backing of gospel singer Cliff Richard, who's version of the Lord's Prayer, sung to the tune of "Auld Lang Syne.," has reached the top spot on pop charts. Bishop wants Church to pray to God the Mother

Nov. 4,1999 - The Bishop of Oxford, the Right Rev Richard Harries, is proposing that a prayer said in the middle of the Eucharist, refer to God as a "mother" who "tenderly gathers her children".

Ventura Talks to Playboy Magazine

Oct. 1, 1999 - Minnesota's controversial wrestler-turned-governor reveals his approval of prostitution and his disdain of organized religion.

Ventura also blamed organized religion for the unpopularity of legalized prostitution, which he has said should be considered.

"Organized religion is a sham and a crutch for weak-minded people who need strength in numbers," he said. "It tells people to go out and stick their noses in other people's business."

The governor's spokesman, John Wodele, sought to clarify the comments, saying Ventura "was talking about extremists of the religious right who are often intolerant, and the governor cannot stand intolerance."

Prosecutions For Obscenity Drop On Clinton Watch

Sept. 29, 1999 - While pornography revenues soar, prosecutions decline in the war against smut.

The pornography industry in the United States has taken off in the past six years, from $3.9 billion in 1993 to more than $8 billion of sexually explicit material sold in 1998. Pornographic materials account for one-tenth of all commerce over the Internet - about $1 billion last year. There are estimated to be over one million pornographic sites currently operating on the Internet, catering to every imaginable sexual proclivity and fetish.

Producers of pornography are not deterred by existing laws because little is done to bring them to justice.

For example, according to Morality in Media, in 1992 the federal government prosecuted individuals or business 42 times under U.S. statutes 1460-1468 - which deal with obscenity - gaining convictions in 25 cases. By 1997 prosecutions had dropped to six with six convictions, each of them dealing with the sale of child pornography. The rate of obscenity cases that U.S. attorneys decline to prosecute has also risen, from 78 percent in 1992 to 83 percent in 1997.

Fate of 'train deaths' case rests with jury

July 9, 1999 - A $16 million federal lawsuit against filmmaker Pat Matrisciana for supposedly defaming two law enforcement officers has gone to the jury for deliberation. Matrisciana produced the "Clinton Chronicles," and then later the video in question: "Obstruction of Justice: the Mena Connection." The video implicates the two Pulaski County sheriff deputies, Jay Campbell and Kirk Lane, in connection with the now-famous "Train-deaths" of two teenagers in 1987.

The defense suffered a severe setback when a key witness disappeared. Last seen Tuesday at noon -- with a "scared look" in his eyes -- Ronnie Godwin slipped quietly away from the federal courts building where it was expected he'd testify.

Parents Are Alarmed by an Unsettling New Fad in Middle Schools

July 8, 1999 - According to this front-page story in the Washington Post, parents in Arlington, VA were shocked to discover that a significant and growing number of middle school students were engaging in oral sex. The kids had no understanding of the health and emotional dangers involved.

When some parents tried to speak to their daughters, the girls shrugged off the significance of what they had done. "What's the big deal? President Clinton did it," one said.

Evangelicals suffer as Christian values fade in France

July 8, 1999 - In France, secularism and the occult reign. Evangelical Grace Church, a church of 200 in France is the equavalent of a mega church in the US, but it is considered a cult there, as are all Evangelicals, Pentecostals, and Charismatic Catholics. Louis DeMeo has been pastor there for 16 years.

Only about 8% of France’s professing Christians actively practice their faith, the lowest percentage in Western Europe, he said. About .5% of the country’s 60 million population, about 300,000 people, are evangelicals.

Fewer Americans Than Ever Getting Married-Study

July 3, 1999- 'The State of Our Unions: The Social Health of Marriage in America,' is a Rutgers University's National Marriage Project written by David Popenoe and Barbara Dafoe Whitehead. It claims that Americans have not given up on marriage as an ideal, but there has been a steep drop since 1960 in the number of couples who actually take the plunge.

According to the report, the number of marriages per 1,000 unmarried women aged 15 or older dropped to about 49.7 in 1996 versus 87.5 in 1960. At the same time, the number of unmarried couples living with each other rose to 4.2 million in 1998 versus 439,000 in 1960.

From 'Dad knows best' to "Dad's a loser' in 50 years

June 20 - Father's Day - This article in the Star Tribune laments the fact that television portrayal of fathers has shifted radically during the past 50 years.

A study of the prime-time offerings of the five major networks (ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox and WB) has found that only five programs -- an average of one per network, all week long -- portray a father as competent and involved with his family.

The Maryland-based National Fatherhood Initiative found that viewers who turn on their sets at random -- even early in the evening, when the greatest number of children watch -- are 15 times more likely to find a show where "sex between unmarried adults is the recurrent and central theme than a show where responsible fatherhood is."

Library Association to Rethink Web Policy

May 15, 1999 - Dr. Laura Schlessinger and others have exposed the danger of the American Library Association's (ALA) Internet link to a web site called Go Ask Alice, on which teenage children may find information about "a variety of exotic sexual practices, including safe sex with animals and how to clean and maintain certain implements used in sadistic sexual encounters, among other things."

US army recruits witches to guard pagans' rights

May 14, 1999 - White witchcraft, also known as Wicca, and Paganism, has been recognized by the United States Army as a religion, and it has appointed chaplains to oversee pagan ceremonies on at least five bases.

A Pentagon spokesman said yesterday that there were believed to be at least 100 witches attending covens at Fort Hood, Texas, the army's largest base with more than 42,000 troops. So respectful has the army become of the pagan rites that security was increased at Fort Hood's Boy Scout camp, where covens are held.

At Least 14 Dead In Colorado School

April 21, 1999 - Teen-agers killed students in Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado before taking their own lives yesterday. Reports of the number dead vary from 14 to 25, and the investigation was proceeding very slowly due to possible explosives left by the killers.

According to a Washington Post story, the students were part of a group of outcasts called the ``Trench Coat Mafia'' with neo-nazi and gothic views. They collected guns but had no history of violence. The event took place on Hitler's birthday. (Story no longer online)

Clinton Held In Contempt

April 13, 1999 - President Clinton was found guilty yesterday of Contempt of Court by Judge Susan Webber Wright, who tried (and dismissed) the Paula Jones case. She said:

"The record demonstrates by clear and convincing evidence that the President responded to plaintiff's questions by giving false, misleading and evasive answers that were designed to obstruct the judicial process."

The decision means that he must pay Jones' legal fees and could lose his right to practice law. It could also whet Ken Starr's appetite for a post-term perjury prosecution.

Feb. 19, 1999 - Published accounts are now appearing of an alleged rape 20 years ago by then-Arkansas Attorney General, Bill Clinton. The Washington Post reports that the story was printed in the op-ed section of the Wall Street Journal. The woman, Juanita Broaddrick claims that her earlier denial of the event was false.
